Clothes To Wear In Door-to-door Sales

When you work as a door-to-door salesperson, making a good first impressions is absolutely crucial! Nothing can be more devastating to your spirit than getting the door slammed in your face over and over again. In fact every rejection you get at the door makes you perform worse at the next one. Making it a negative spiral.

First things first. You gotta where the right clothes. People tend to buy from eighter people that are similar to them, or people they look up to. That means you can’t wear ugly and dirty clothes. Would you have let somebody into your house that looked like an bum? Certainly not, and so wouldn’t your prospects eighter. On the other end, dress to nice, and you would just look plain silly. The key is to wear clothes that are as neutral as possible. For a male salesperson a clean pair of jeans (with no holes in them), and a shirt works perfectly. Having tried a lot of different colours over the years, different shades of dark blue tend to work very well. As for shoes, it’s important that they are waterproof. The moment you are wet on your feet, that salesday is basicly over. Making a trail of water from wet socks on your prospects living room floor won’t give you any sales.

If you have worked a lot as a salesperson, you will probably be aware of the fact that it is a smart move to “mirror” your prospects. That simply means that you try to talk and act in the same way as them. If they talk slowly, you talk slowty etc. But, when you walk up to a new door, you know absolutely nothing about the person behind it. Therefore you have to act in a way that *most* people like. In my experice that means talking with a pleasant and calm voice. Use a relaxed body language and hold eye contact at all times! People who don’t make eye contact sends out a signal to other people that they eighter have low self-esteem or are trying to hide something. Not exacly the recipe of a successful salesperson.

You should also rehears and learn your opening lines so that you know them by heart. It is also of uttermost importance that any objections you get in this early phase of the sales pitch is answered in a rapid way with no hesitation. So before you even go out selling, you should sit down with a piece of paper and write down every possible objection you might encounter and replies on how to solve them. Don’t give out to much information about your service or product at the door. Your goal should at all times be getting inside the house where you could give a full sales presentation.

How To Create A 30-60-90-day Business Plan To Use In A Non-sales Interview

Can you use a 30-60-90-day plan for non-sales jobs? Of course–it works for marketing, project management, technical support, and many others. For instance, I got a call from a candidate going for a job in Marketing Communications. He had a 30-60-90-day template, but needed help translating it into a document for a non-sales job like the one he wanted. We spent a few minutes brainstorming together, and came up with some ideas and new directions that I also wanted to share with you.

To begin with, remember that there are objectives you have to achieve in every job. They aren’t all achievable in the first 30-60-90-days (or even in the first 180 or 360 days), but even with a really long-term objective, there should be some kind of break down of what needs to be done when, and certainly at least some of them can be taken care of within the first 30-60-90 days. So, for example: if you are in Marketing Communications, and you’re supposed to be building to a complete product launch in 9 months, there are some things that can be listed out to be done in the first 30-60-90-days in order to set yourself on the path to success and prosperity. Those are the objectives that you would use in place of sales objectives.

The same types of communications happen in many kinds of jobs – just not necessarily with customers. Instead of meeting with outside customers (as in sales), you might have more internal meetings, or you might be meeting with external vendors. For example, if you’re an events coordinator, you’re going to have to go on sites, request and review bids, share those with the sales staff perhaps, and have a plan for what needs to be done when.

Other possibilities for objectives to include in your 30-60-90-day plan: training, site visits, or learning company systems. There are many ways to tailor a 30-60-90-day plan to whatever job you’re interviewing for. Also, learning enough about the job to put one together will be helpful to you when you ask your own questions in the interview, because you’ll start off with more information than the average candidate.

The point to keep in mind is: Creating a 30-60-90-day plan shows initiative, preparation, written communication skills, and that you’re interested enough in this job to have done your homework. That’s always impressive to hiring managers.

Manipulative Advertising

When photography was first invented, people believed that what they saw on the image was the most accurate and realistic portrayal of reality. They believed it to be “the truth”. Nowadays people will think twice before they believe anything portrayed on a photo or billboard. Photoshop makes it possible to alter something that is “normal” and change it into something that is more pleasing to the eye. You could even create entirely new things with Photoshop. With today’s technology, people can do literally anything they want with images. How can anyone believe what he sees anymore?

Manipulating images that are to be seen in commercials or on billboards have reached the point where it becomes unethical and give people a distorted view of reality. Due to this manipulation a conflict arises between ethics and aesthetics and how these two are used in advertisements. Ethics are a set of rules that define what is thought of the be good and bad, whilst aesthetics deals with the nature of beauty, taste and things that are pleasing in appearance.

The problem that has occurred is that there is almost no limit to what man is capable of doing to an image, even though many things are done to images with the best intentions. The major issue here is when does the pursuit of aesthetics exceed our ethics? When people go to the movies, they can see aliens or dinosaurs that appear almost real. In this situation it does not matter when the film is digitally altered because people expect it. When looking at an advertisement, however, people expect to see the truth and they will feel betrayed or fooled when it does not portray a real image.

The difficult question to many people is ‘how far is too far?’. It is very difficult to say so since there is not just black and white. There is an immense grey area in between with a lot of controversial topics. Enhancing a faint detail in the original image to make it more visible, or more aesthetically appealing, is ethically acceptable. Adding something that was not there in the first place is not. Even here it is difficult to say how much is too much. In 2006 Cosmetics company Dove made an eye-opening commercial that shows how easy it is to enhance an advertisement and to send out a misleading message to the public, called ‘The evolution of beauty’.

Unfortunately this happens far too much, especially in the cosmetics industry. Because only the most perfect models are portrayed on advertisements, ‘normal’ people are lead to believe that that is the way to look. Especially the younger generations, girls in particular, are easily influenced by these ads. They do not know what is ‘normal’ anymore and the only way to look perfect is to be super skinny. This issue is ethically challenging and many people think it should be dealt with. However, aesthetically speaking people do find it pleasing and they prefer seeing perfect supermodels to ordinary looking people that resemble the average girl next door more. Yet another difficult matter in the battle for ethical acceptability.

Manipulative advertising is wrong. It only becomes a question of ethics, and therefore a problem, when there has been lied about the motivations and if images are being portrayed with the purpose to intentionally deceive. What is important is the motivation. Why are certain things done? Are they done to deceive people? Most advertisements are altered to become visually more interesting, not to deceive the customers. Most of the time people are just trying to make a better picture. Just as a writer may enhance his stories with metaphors and adjectives, photographers and the people behind advertisements try to enhance their images with digital techniques and color enhancement.

Luckily today most advertisers strive to achieve and maintain fair ethical standards and practice socially responsible advertising. Employees of an advertisement company are rarely forced to work on accounts they morally oppose. To protect the consumer, the advertising industry has become a heavily regulated profession. Many laws, regulations and regulatory bodies have been created so far. Advertising now is being reviewed, controlled and modified by governments and consumer groups in order to stop manipulative and deceptive ads.
